Luke 19:28-44

The Triumphal Entry[according to Luke]

After Brother Ted’s sermon yesterday, I was a little curious about Luke, also known as Saint Luke and Luke the Evangelist.

Here are a few fun facts I discovered:

· Luke was not part of “the Twelve” disciples of Jesus; those were – Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, Thaddeus & Judas Iscariot

·         Luke was not an eyewitness to Jesus’ ministry, but he did live during the first century and according to his own writings, he “carefully investigated everything from the beginning” [Luke 1:1-4]

·         He wrote his gospel using documents and accounts from people who were actually there

·         He was, however, a traveling companion of Paul and likely had direct access to the apostles

·         Paul refers to Luke as a doctor [Colossians 4:14] and Luke uses precise medical terms to describe people’s afflictions

·         He is considered an Evangelist along with Matthew, Mark, and John because their writings proclaim the “good news” or gospel of Jesus Christ

·         Luke wrote about 27.5% of the New Testament – that’s more than anyone else, including Paul.  He is credited with both the Gospel of Luke and The Book of Acts, though they are technically anonymous

Like Luke, we are not eyewitnesses to the life of Jesus but rely on our faith and the accounts of others.

“Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want.
It is the belief that God will do what is right.”

As we enter Holy Week, the old question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” cannot hold more irony than it does as we look to Good Friday.  Brother Ted reminded us of this yesterday.

Never forget “We are not saved by what we do, but by what Christ has done for us” - It is finished!
